Digiweb, one of Ireland’s leading Business-to-Business and Consumer Internet Service Provider conduced an online survey and found an increase in line rental charges. According to the web site provider, Ireland has the highest cost of line rental in Europe as well as having one of the lowest broadband take up rates. The following is the average rate of line rental in different EU countries:
Ireland €25.36
Germany: €15.95
Spain €15.00
France €16.31
UK €16.31
Italy €14.57
Poland €12.53
Ireland is the most expensive country in Europe for line rental., over 62% more expensive than the EU average per month. An increase in line rental charges would discourage them from getting DSL broadband.
All the respondents in the survey said they would be unwilling to pay for any future increases in the cost of line rental, Most of the people were unaware of the fact that broadband could be accessed without a landline.
Digiweb is an Authorised Telecommunications Provider with ComReg, and holds broadband FWALA licences throughout Ireland. In 2005, the firm added “Metro” to its portfolio. The Internet provider uses wireless and cable modem technology to deliver digital telephony and internet access to users and has dispensed with the use of traditional phone lines. The company offers an always-on broadband & phone service without the need of a landline at the lowest cost of €19.95 per month .
The online survey has clearly indicated the reluctance among Irish consumers to pay additional line rental charges. Digiweb is advertising the need for the people of Ireland to be aware that broadband can be delivered over a number of platforms and paying line rental is often unnecessary just to get access to broadband and phone services.
Communications regulator ComReg, has started freezing the line rental charges of Internet providers in Ireland, who start increasing the rent. Now such providers can only seek permission for price increases in line with inflation, This action protects consumers from excessive price increases and at the same time gives the providers an incentive to deliver services as efficiently as possible.
